THE YOUNG CELLIST MARIONA CAMATS TORRENTS WINS THE 2016 PAU CASALS INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP
The 2016 Pau Casals International Scholarship jury, chaired by Marta Casals and made up of leading international figures such as Lluís Claret, Claudio Bohorquez, Julius Berger and Josep Maria Escribano, have awarded the scholarship to the 19-year-old cellist Mariona Camats Torrents.
On Saturday 1 October at the Pau Casals Municipal Music School in El Vendrell the auditions for the seven candidates for the International Scholarship were held. During the day they performed the Prelude, the Sarabande and the Gigue from one of Bach’s Suites and the first movement of Haydn’s Concerto in D major with cadenza before the jury. The young finalists, who came from Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, and from Turkey, Latvia and Hungary, gave performances of an outstanding level.
Marta Casals, Maestro Casals’ widow and president of the jury, emphasised the great worth of all the candidates and the high level the finalists for the Scholarship achieve year after year. She said that since its creation in 1984 the Pau Casals Scholarship has helped more than fifty cellists to broaden their studies and consolidate their level of training.
I. To award the 2016 Pau Casals International Scholarship to Mariona Camats i Torrents (La Garriga, Barcelona. 1997). Student at the Leopold Mozart Zentrum in Augsburg (Germany)
II. To award the 2016 Pau Casals International Scholarship extra to Alfredo Ferre Martínez (Elda, Alicante. 1994). Student at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía. (Madrid)
III. Given the high level of the finalists’ performances at this year’s competition they agreed to award the honourable distinction to:
Jamal Aliyev (Ankara. Turkey, 1993). Student at the Royal College of Music (London)
Margarita Balanas (Latvia, 1993). Student at the Royal Academy of Music (London)
Guillermo Ortega Santos (Madrid, 1995) . Student at the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio (Madrid)
Nerea Sorozábal Moreno ( Madrid, 1994). Student at the Hochschule für Musik und theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (Germany)
Laura Szabó (Hungary, 1993). Student at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía (Madrid)
The winner of the 2016 competition, Mariona Camats Torrents, was born in La Garriga (Vallès Oriental, Barcelona) in 1997 and is currently following advanced studies at the Leopold- Mozart-Zentrum at Augsburg University (Germany).
